Whether it is for their appearance on the red carpet post-gym paparazzi moments or their interpersonal relationship. Among the many such relationships that remain in the spotlight Aishwarya Rai and Abhishek Bachchans marriage has always made headlines. Married since 2007 the couple has often faced speculation and rumours but an old interview from 2009 with Oprah Winfrey beautifully reflects their bond mutual respect and Indian values.
When Abhishek Bachchan proposed to Aishwarya Rai
In the interview Abhishek Bachchan opened up about the time he proposed to Aishwarya Rai. He revealed “I was filming in New York and I used to stand on the balcony of my hotel room and wish that I could be with her. Some time later I took her to the same balcony and she asked me to marry her.” This heartwarming revelation spoke about their fairy tale love story.

Later in the interview a video of Abhishek and Aishwaryas wedding was played where a massive crowd gathered outside during their marriage. Speaking about the grandeur of Indian wedding celebrations Abhishek said “They’re usually long because Indians love to celebrate.”
Oprah known for her candid humour then said that it must be “difficult to get a divorce after such an elaborate wedding” to which Aishwarya instantly replied “We don’t even try and entertain that thought.” Aishwaryas quick reply spoke about her commitment and how seriously she takes the institution of marriage.
On living with parents and Indian traditions
The conversation also touched upon the Indian tradition of living with one’s parents after marriage. When Oprah asked “So you’re both living with your (Abhishek’s) parents? How does that work?” Abhishek responded playfully “Do you live with your parents?”
When Oprah said no Abhishek smiled and replied “How does that work?”
Adding to that Aishwarya explained gracefully “It’s fine to live with your parents because it’s also common in India that we don’t have to take appointments to meet our parents for dinner.”
