Importance of Margashirsha month
According to the calendar, the arrival of Margashirsha month, also known as Agahan month, is near. Special importance of this month has been mentioned in religious texts. It is believed that by taking bath, donating and donating lamps during this period, all sins are eliminated and salvation is attained. Lord Shri Krishna has said in Srimad Bhagavad Gita that ‘I am the leader among the months’, which shows the religious importance of this month.
This year the month of Margashirsha will start from 6th November 2025, Thursday. It starts the next day after Kartik Purnima and will end with Margashirsha Purnima on 04 December 2025. This month is considered best for chanting, penance and meditation.
Worship these Gods and Goddesses:
Bathing in holy rivers: In this month, taking bath in Ganga, Yamuna or any holy river before sunrise is very fruitful. If bathing in the river is not possible then add basil leaves in the bathing water and take bath. Chant ‘Om Namo Bhagwate Narayana’ or Gayatri Mantra while bathing.
Deepdan: Donating lamps has special significance in the month of Margashirsha. In the evening, a lamp must be lit near the Tulsi plant and in the temple. This karma brings light and positivity in life.
Donation: In this month, donating food, clothes, blankets, jaggery and sesame seeds as per one’s capacity is considered very auspicious.
Margashirsha month is dear to Lord Vishnu and his incarnation Lord Krishna. This month is considered best for spiritual purification and devotion. This month is considered to be the form of Lord Shri Krishna. By doing special worship of him this month, the mind gets peace and all the wishes are fulfilled. According to mythology, Satyayuga started from the month of Margashirsha. This is why this month is so sacred and special. It is believed that auspicious deeds done with devotion in this month open the doors of heaven for a person.
