Google, a leading company in the technology sector, has introduced a new feature for its smartphone users to maintain longer battery life. This new feature of the company is being known as ‘Battery Health Assistance’, the purpose of which is to control the degradation that occurs over time in lithium-ion batteries.

As batteries age, their capacity reduces, causing smartphones to charge poorly, discharge faster, and sometimes impact the user experience. According to Google, this new software feature will gradually adjust the battery’s maximum voltage and charging speed to maintain the long-term health of the battery.

The company has initially announced the inclusion of this feature in its upcoming Pixel 9a model, which is scheduled to launch in April 2025.

Users often begin to notice a drop in battery performance after 200 charge-cycles; Google says that from this point onwards the feature will activate and try to keep the battery healthy for up to 1000 charge-cycles.

This process may reduce the charging speed slightly or the battery may not charge to full voltage—but the company claims that this way the battery will be able to maintain its health for a longer period of time.

Analysts say the move is important for the smartphone industry as battery health has been one of the biggest concerns of users. If the battery drains quickly, the user may have to charge frequently or have the battery replaced. Google wants to eliminate this problem.

However, some reviewers have criticized this feature for not allowing the user to activate it optionally. This means that even if the battery is charging slowly or is underperforming, the user will not have the option to turn it off himself.

This also matters in the Indian market as smartphone usage is widespread here, and consumers are very sensitive to battery performance. Google has hinted towards adopting it in India too, so that its smartphones provide better performance in the long run.

To be fair, this feature won’t immediately double or triple battery life, but it could help reduce performance degradation as the battery ages. In such a situation, if you are thinking of buying a new Google smartphone, then this battery-health management feature may influence your decision.

It is not just a habit, it is also a danger: Drinking water while standing can cause these harms.
