Godzilla Minus Zero
Toho has officially announced the sequel to its 2023 blockbuster Godzilla Minus One, unveiling the title Godzilla Minus Zero during Godzilla Fest 2025 in Tokyo. The event marked the 70th anniversary of the iconic Godzilla franchise.

Written and directed by Takashi Yamazaki, who also served as visual effects supervisor on Godzilla Minus One, the filmmaker will return in the same capacities for the sequel. Yamazaki also designed the official logo for Godzilla Minus Zero.

Godzilla Minus One was both a critical and commercial triumph, grossing over $113 million worldwide on a modest $10–15 million budget. The film made history by becoming the first Japanese production to win an Oscar for Best Visual Effects at the 96th Academy Awards, solidifying its status as a global phenomenon.

The Godzilla franchise, which began in 1954 with the original black-and-white classic, has continued to evolve across decades. While Hollywood reboots like the 1998 and 2014 films received mixed reviews, the latter launched the successful “MonsterVerse,” featuring crossovers such as Godzilla: King of the Monsters, Godzilla vs Kong, and Godzilla x Kong: The New Empire. The most recent entry, Godzilla x Kong: The New Empire (2024), grossed over $572 million globally — the highest in the franchise to date. A follow-up, Godzilla x Kong: Supernova, is set for release on March 26, 2027.

Beyond films, the franchise has expanded into television. Monarch: Legacy of Monsters, the first live-action Godzilla series, premiered on Apple TV+ in 2023 and received strong reviews. A second season and multiple spinoffs are already in development.

Godzilla Minus One marked the 30th live-action Godzilla film produced in Japan and earned more than 50 awards globally. Its success has fueled a major revival for the franchise, with new titles in development both in Japan and the U.S., under Toho and Legendary’s collaboration.

As for the meaning behind Godzilla Minus Zero, Toho has not revealed specific plot details. Godzilla Minus One was set before the events of the original 1954 film, and speculation suggests the sequel may serve as a reimagining of that classic story. The studio teased fans to “stay tuned for further updates.”
