When you are feeling unwell, your first instinct might be to book a GP appointment, but you may want to try something else first. The NHS has reminded people that pharmacies offer quicker and more convenient solutions if you are poorly.

It stressed that pharmacists can provide treatment and, in some cases, certain prescription medication without the need to see a GP. The NHS highlighted seven specific conditions and noted that those needing the contraceptive pill can also receive support through their pharmacy.

In its fresh warning posted to X, it wrote: "Your pharmacist can provide treatment or some prescription medicine, if needed, for seven common conditions - without you seeing a GP. Think pharmacy first and get seen by your local community pharmacy team. #AskYourPharmacist."

Seven common conditions you can get help with at the pharmacy

Pharmacists can suggest non-prescription treatments for a range of common health issues, and many can now give certain prescription medicines for specific conditions. This is called Pharmacy First.

Conditions they can offer prescription medicine for are:

  • impetigo (aged 1 year and over)
  • infected insect bites (aged 1 year and over)
  • earache (aged 1 to 17 years)
  • sore throat (aged 5 years and over)
  • sinusitis (aged 12 years and over)
  • urinary tract infections (UTIs) (women aged 16 to 64 years)
  • shingles (aged 18 years and over)
  • When you visit a pharmacy with one of these conditions, the pharmacist will assess your symptoms, offer guidance, provide treatment, or refer you to a GP or another healthcare specialist if needed. If they are unable to help you, they can refer you to a GP or another healthcare professional, according to the NHS. Do not worry if you’re outside these age ranges as it is confirmed that pharmacists can still give expert advice and help you select over-the-counter treatments.

If you need to get the contraceptive pill, you can do this without a prescription. The NHS noted: "Some pharmacies may offer the contraceptive pill for free without a prescription. If you are aged 18 years or older, you can also buy the progesterone-only pill from most pharmacies."
