Due to increased humidity during rainy and winter seasons, many things kept in the kitchen start getting spoiled. Especially rice, which gets infested with mites or insects if stored for a long time. These not only spoil the quality of rice but also spoil the taste and aroma.
Many times women spend hours separating these mites by hand, which is a very tiring task. But with some easy home remedies, you can make rice clean and safe again without much effort.
The easiest and most effective way to remove weevils from rice is to expose them to sunlight. For this, spread the rice on a big plate or sheet and leave it in strong sunlight for 2-3 hours. Due to the heat of the sun, the mites and insects will automatically come out and the moisture in the rice will also be lost.
Neem has natural disinfectant properties that keep the mites away. For this, just take some dry neem leaves and keep them in a rice box. This will not only eliminate the mites present but the rice will also not spoil for a long time.
Mites do not like the smell of bay leaves at all. If you keep 2-3 bay leaves in a box of rice, the mites will run away and will not re-infest. This method is effective in preserving not only rice but also flour, pulses and dry grains.
This is an old and trusted recipe which is being followed since the time of grandmothers. Put some coarse salt on the bottom or top of the rice container. Salt absorbs moisture, due to which mites and insects cannot grow.
If there are too many weevils in rice then try this solution. Spread rice in a plate and place a small bowl in the middle. Add some white vinegar in it and add ¼ teaspoon asafoetida. The weevils cannot tolerate the pungent smell of vinegar and asafoetida, due to which they run away leaving the rice.
With these easy and home remedies, you can keep your rice safe for a long time. Without chemicals and without any hassle. Now there is no need to worry about mites, just use some common sense and keep your kitchen clean and healthy.
