Official Name Change Announcement

On Tuesday, the Maharashtra government received approval from the Ministry of Home Affairs (MHA) to officially rename Islamapur in Sangli district to Ishwarpur. Consequently, the Islamapur Municipal Council will now be referred to as the Urun Ishwarpur Municipal Council.

Process and Approval for the Name Change

The initiative to change the name began earlier this year when the state assembly passed a resolution on July 18, 2025, recommending the alteration. This proposal was forwarded to the central government for final approval. In October, the National Mapping Agency of India issued an ordinance formalizing the new name. Following this, the Indian Postal Service and Indian Railways were instructed to update their official records and systems to reflect this change across all administrative and public platforms.

Part of a Broader Trend in Maharashtra

The renaming of Islamapur aligns with a broader trend in Maharashtra, where cities like Aurangabad, Osmanabad, and Ahmednagar have recently been renamed to Chhatrapati Sambhajinagar, Dharashiv, and Ahilyanagar, respectively.

Public Reactions: Celebrations and Concerns

Following the announcement, celebrations erupted in Ishwarpur, with residents distributing sweets and setting off fireworks. Many locals welcomed the change, recognizing it as an acknowledgment of the city's historical and cultural identity. One resident, Satish Godse, remarked, "This decision restores our historical and cultural identity. From now on, we will use 'Ishwarpur' in all our official and personal dealings."
