Enhancing Agricultural Infrastructure in Tripura
Agartala, Nov 5: In a bid to promote self-sufficiency in crop production, the Tripura government has inaugurated 144 rural markets, investing Rs 303.44 crore since the BJP took office in 2018, as stated by Ratan Lal Nath, the state's Agriculture and Farmers' Welfare Minister.
During an official event in Khowai district, Minister Nath announced plans to establish an additional market in each of the 60 Assembly constituencies throughout Tripura, enabling farmers to sell their products more easily.
He highlighted that these 144 rural markets were developed with financial support from NABARD under the Rural Infrastructure Development Fund (RIDF) initiative.
"From 2018-19 to the present, we have allocated Rs 303.44 crore for the development of these markets, whereas the previous Left Front government spent only Rs 20 crore on market infrastructure over the last seven years," the Minister remarked.
Nath also mentioned that Dhalai and Khowai districts are on track to achieve self-sufficiency in food grain production, with the government promoting urban farming initiatives in urban areas.
According to him, three districts—South Tripura, Sepahijala, and Gomati—are already self-sufficient in food grain production.
He noted that while Tripura enjoys ample rainfall conducive to good crop yields, pest infestations remain a significant challenge.
"Previously, we relied on external sources for potatoes, but we anticipate becoming self-sufficient in potato and onion production within three years. We are also encouraging increased pulse cultivation and focusing on organic farming, which is gradually improving," the Minister added.
He acknowledged that limited cultivable land restricts production capacity, stating, "If we had more land, our output could increase significantly. Our farmers are diligent, and with favorable rainfall, Dhalai and Khowai will also achieve food grain self-sufficiency. In the West District, where population density is high and land is scarce, we are prioritizing urban farming, particularly in horticulture."
Nath mentioned the 'Pradhan Mantri Dhan Dhaanya Krishi Yojana', launched by Prime Minister Narendra Modi on October 11, which aims to enhance agricultural development in 100 districts, including North Tripura District.
He pointed out that Tripura ranks sixth in national rice production, with an average yield of 3,299 kg per hectare, surpassing the national average of 2,882 kg per hectare.
In terms of pulses, the state’s yield is 856 kg per hectare, slightly below the national average of 881 kg per hectare.
"In agricultural financing, Sepahijala district leads, followed by South and West Districts, while North District has received fewer loans. These metrics are under national scrutiny," the Minister explained.
He emphasized the importance of pulse production, stating, "Agriculture is the backbone of India. The Prime Minister envisions modernizing and stabilizing agricultural management to position India as the world's grain bank."
Nath concluded by noting that approximately 70% of Tripura's population relies on agriculture for their livelihoods, asserting, "Achieving agricultural self-reliance is crucial for the state's progress. The Agriculture and Farmers' Welfare Department is dedicated to enhancing farmers' incomes and ensuring food crop self-sufficiency."
