The effect of pollution is not limited to the lungs only, but it is also dangerous for the unborn child. The risk of autism in children is increasing due to pollution. Children's lungs and immune system are not yet fully developed, so they absorb pollution particles and harmful gases rapidly. At the same time, pregnant women are also directly affected by these harmful particles, due to which the level of oxygen and nutrients in their body can be affected. Chronic exposure to high AQI (Air Quality Index) has serious implications for the health of both mother and child, including respiratory problems, weakness and risks to neurodevelopment.

pollution Prolonged exposure can cause many health problems in both the pregnant woman and the child. Shortness of breath, fatigue, weak immune system and heart related risks may increase in women. Pollution in children directly affects the development of their brain and body. Due to this, the learning ability of children may reduce, there may be difficulty in concentrating in studies and changes in behavior may also be seen. Additionally, harmful particles present in the air can affect the neurodevelopment of the baby in the womb, increasing the risk of autism and other neurological problems after birth.

How does pollution affect the development of a pregnant woman and child?

Dr. Shefali Gulati, Faculty Incharge, Child Neurology Division, Department of Pediatrics, AIIMS According to, PM2.5, NO₂, other harmful particles and gases present in pollution can enter the body and weaken the natural protection of the brain. These particles in the body of a pregnant woman reach the child through the placenta, which can harm its brain development. This results in neurodevelopment problems in children.

The risk of autism increases in children exposed to pollution for a long time. Autism is a condition in which a child has difficulty in communication, behavior and social interaction. At the same time, due to increase in oxidative stress and inflammation in the brain, symptoms like Alzheimer's can also appear in the future. These symptoms include weakening of memory, decreased concentration and impaired thinking ability.

How to protect?

Pay attention to air quality (AQI) and avoid going out during pollution times.

Keep an air purifier or green plant in the house.

Pregnant women and children should wear masks, especially in areas with dust and smoke.

Avoid outdoor sports or long walks when the AQI is poor.

Take a nutritious diet and keep the child's immunity strong.
