Ruben Amorim has admitted that Cristiano Ronaldo was right to highlight the "lot of mistakes" Manchester United made in the past. The United manager was responding to the club's former star forward after he took aim at his ex-employers in an interview with Piers Morgan.

Ronaldo said Amorim was fighting an uphill battle to turn things around at United due to the structures in place around him. But while agreeing that mistakes had been made, Amorim unsurprisingly painted a much more positive picture of the club today.

"Of course, he knows he has huge impact on everything he says," he said in a press conference ahead of United's game against Tottenham on Saturday. "But what we need to focus on is in future. We know as a club we made a lot of mistakes in the past. We are trying to change that.

"Let’s not focus on what happened. We need to focus on the future. Let’s focus on the way we are doing things. We are changing a lot of things, the structure, the way we want the players to behave, we are improving. Let’s forget a little bit the past."

Ronaldo left United under a cloud in December 2022 for Saudi Arabia after a major falling out during his second spell with the club. He has sniped at the club on a few occasions since - and repeated his scathing view of them this week.

“For me, I'm sad because of the club, that’s one of the most important clubs in the world, and a club that I still have in my heart because of the obvious reasons," he told Morgan.

He added: “You have to follow with the intelligent people, smart people, to create a base for the future as Manchester United have [done] so many years ago. Nicky Butt, Gary, Roy Keane, Beckham, they became big players but they had youth. So Manchester United right now, they don't have a structure.

“I hope that changes in the future, present/future, because the potential of the club, it's amazing. It's one of the most important clubs of the century."

Asked for his views on Amorim, Ronaldo said: “He’s doing his best. What are you going to do? Miracles. Miracles is impossible. We say in Portugal, ‘Miracles is only in Fatima’... And he’s not gonna do miracles. They have good players, but they don’t have, some of them, in mind what Manchester United is.”
