SunRisers Hyderabad are likely to release some high-value players to enhance their purse ahead of the IPL 2026 mini auction, reports said.
Though the BCCI is yet to officially announce the deadline for the franchises to submit their final retention list ahead of the mini auction, the Hyderabad-based IPL team is already in the news over the potential release of big names such as Heinrich Klaasen and Mohammed Shami.
The South African wicketkeeper-batter has been with the team since 2023, and has been one of their batting mainstays. He has scored 1,414 runs so far for SRH, in 42 matches at an average of 44.19 and an impressive strike rate of 173.66. That Klaasen, 34, scored over 400 runs in each of the three seasons, speaks volumes of his consistency. However, a high retention price tag of Rs 23 crore seems to have forced the franchise to rethink ahead of the new season.
Shami, on the other hand, has been under an injury cloud despite returning to domestic cricket. The 35-year-old was signed by the SRH for Rs 10 crore in the IPL 2025 auction, making him one of the most expensive buys of the season. However, he had an underwhelming season, picking up only six wickets in nine matches, at a high average of 56.17 and economy rate of 11.73. Shami also suffered the ignominy of recording the worst-ever figures by an Indian bowler in IPL history, when he conceded 75 runs in his four overs without taking a wicket in a match against the Punjab Kings.
He had missed the IPL 2024 season due to knee surgery.
The other names doing the rounds are that of wicketkeeper-batter Ishan Kishan (Rs 11.40 crore), pacer Harshal Patel (Rs 8 crore) and spinner Rahul Chahar (Rs 3.20 crore).
Kishan scored 354 runs in 14 matches at an average of 35.40 last season, but his inconsistency remains a concern for the SRH. Patel, too, performed well, if the numbers are taken into account – 16 wickets in 13 matches. But, his death bowling did not live upto expectations, with an overall economy rate of close to 10. Chahar played only two matches and went wicketless in both.
Reports suggest that the franchises will have to submit their final retention list by November 15, and the mini auction will be held around mid-December.
