Main reasons for nail breakage in winter

  • Lack of moisture: In cold weather the air is dry, due to which there is lack of moisture in the skin and nails. Nails become dry and brittle.
  • Excessive contact with water and detergent, frequent washing of hands or cleaning utensils destroys the natural oil of nails.
  • Deficiency of nutrients: Deficiency of Vitamin B7 (Biotin), Vitamin E, Calcium and Iron also weakens the nails.
  • Effect of cold wind and hot water: Washing hands with hot water destroys the natural oils of nails and cold wind makes them more dry.
  • Wrong nail care: Acetone and chemicals present in nail polish remover further damage the nails.

Ways to keep nails strong and beautiful

  1. After washing hands, apply moisturizer or coconut oil, almond oil, or vaseline. Apply light oil on the cuticles also.
  2. Avoid washing hands with very hot water – lukewarm water is better.
  3. Protect hands from cold and detergent. Wear gloves while doing household chores or washing utensils.
  4. Take a balanced diet. Eat green vegetables, pulses, eggs, milk, nuts and fruits. If doctor advises, take biotin supplement.
  5. Adopt a nail care routine. Don’t keep nails too long. Give up the habit of biting or scratching nails with your teeth. Apply nail oil 1-2 times a week.
  6. Distance from chemicals. Use acetone free nail polish remover.
