Leg-spinner Abrar Ahmed led the way for Pakistan’s spinners with a brilliant four-wicket haul as they bowled out South Africa for just 143 setting up a 2-1 series win in the three-match ODI series at the Iqbal Stadium in Faisalabad on Saturday.
Abrar took 4 for 27 while opener Saim Ayub hit his third ODI fifty to help Pakistan chase down the target comfortably. Pakistan reached 144/3 in 25.1 overs to win by seven wickets sealing victory in Shaheen Shah Afridi’s first ODI series as captain. The win achieved with 24.5 overs to spare ranks among Pakistan’s most dominant in terms of overs remaining.
Pakistan had earlier won the first ODI by two wickets while South Africa bounced back to take the second match by eight wickets at the same venue. With this result South Africa wrapped up their multi-format Pakistan tour — drawing the two-Test series 1-1 but losing both the T20I and ODI series 2-1.
Batting first South Africa began well with Quinton de Kock (53 off 70 balls) and Lhuan-dre Pretorius (39 off 45) adding 72 for the opening wicket. But once Salman Ali Agha (2-18) dismissed Pretorius in the 15th over and Tony de Zorzi in the 19th the collapse began.
Mohammad Nawaz (2-31) removed de Kock lbw in the 25th over and Abrar soon struck twice bowling debutant Rubin Hermann for one and then removing Donovan Ferreira and Corbin Bosch in consecutive balls to reduce South Africa to 117/6. Nawaz added another scalp by getting Bjorn Fortuin and Abrar later dismissed captain Matthew Breetzke (for 130/8) caught behind by Mohammad Rizwan.
Shaheen Afridi cleaned up the tail finishing with 2 for 18 as South Africa were bowled out for 143 in 37.5 overs.
Chasing a small total Pakistan cruised home in 25.1 overs. Opener Saim Ayub led the chase with a superb 77 off 70 balls hitting 11 fours and a six. He shared a 64-run partnership with former captain Babar Azam (27 off 32) and a 65-run stand with Mohammad Rizwan (32* off 45) to seal the win.
