Guwahati, Nov 8: The second edition of The Assam Tribune Dialogue 2025 kicked off on Friday, featuring a series of insightful sessions that delved into topics such as national security, media ethics, and the cultural aspirations of India's youth as the nation approaches its centenary of independence.

Straight Talk with Lt Gen (Retd) Rana Pratap Kalita

The event commenced with a session titled Straight Talk, where Lt Gen (Retd) Rana Pratap Kalita, former General Officer Commanding-in-Chief of the Eastern Command of the Indian Army, engaged in a dialogue with Ramanuj Dutta Choudhury, Executive Editor. Their conversation revolved around the theme of balancing development with security challenges in the North East region of India.

Addressing Pakistan's ongoing antagonism towards India, Gen Kalita remarked, “Pakistan's very existence hinges on fostering anti-India sentiments. Despite facing defeats in multiple wars, they continue to claim victories — in 1965, 1971, and Kargil. Their state policy revolves around terrorism and creating unrest in neighboring nations.”

He highlighted the unique challenges faced by the North East, particularly the vulnerability of the 'chicken neck' corridor. “The increasing presence of China in the north, especially after the recent political changes in Bangladesh, poses a significant threat. Any attempt by adversarial forces to sever this corridor could physically isolate the entire region,” he cautioned.

Cultural Expressions and Societal Reflections

The inaugural thematic session, titled “Oral Traditions to Digital Narrative: Cultural Expressions & Societal Reflections,” featured prominent figures such as filmmaker Jahnu Barua, theatre director Sunil Shanbag, and filmmaker Rima Das. Moderated by Dr. Asha Kuthari Chaudhuri from Gauhati University, the discussion explored how cinema and performing arts connect folklore with modern storytelling.

Rima Das shared her perspective on technology's impact on filmmaking, stating, “The digital revolution has democratized filmmaking. As a woman, it was challenging in the past, but technology has opened doors. Today, we can create films using mobile phones. My roots and my grandmother's stories inspire my work, representing not just my voice but those of my community.”

Ethics in Media and Creative Wellbeing

The session on “Ethics in Media: Representing Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion” brought together Afrida Rahman Ali, Executive Editor of Free Press Journal; author and journalist Samrat Choudhury; and Ramanuj Dutta Choudhury. Moderated by Karma Paljor, Editor-in-Chief of East Mojo, the panel discussed the evolving ethics of journalism and the media's responsibility to maintain truth and empathy in a complex world.

A special segment titled “Wellbeing and Creativity Through Music” featured violinist Sunita Bhuyan, who illustrated how music can enhance mindfulness, emotional balance, and creative expression.

Harnessing Assam’s Sporting Potential

Another engaging discussion, “Harnessing Assam’s Sporting Potential,” included sports figures Madhurjya Barua, Larsing S D Sawyan, and Jayanta Talukdar, who shared insights on improving sports infrastructure, nurturing grassroots talent, and shaping the future of athletics in Assam.

Young Leaders’ Vision for India @100

The day concluded with an inspiring session titled “Young Leaders’ Vision for India @100,” featuring social worker Hasina Kharbhih, poet and political leader Mmhonlumo Kikon, and AASU President Utpal Sarma. The panelists articulated their hopes for a more equitable and prosperous India as the nation approaches its centenary of independence.

Utpal Sarma emphasized the importance of addressing regional aspirations, stating, “For India @100, it is crucial that regional needs are met. Even after nearly eight decades of independence, these aspirations remain unfulfilled. Constitutional protections must be established for Assam's indigenous people to safeguard their identity. I envision improved living standards, economic growth, healthcare, and connectivity, as these elements are interconnected.”

Conclusion of Day 1

With a blend of insightful discussions and creative perspectives, Day 1 of The Assam Tribune Dialogue 2025 set a reflective and engaging tone for the event, celebrating the leadership, ideas, and innovations that will shape the future of the region.
