Mithila Marriage Rituals: In some parts of India, including Bihar, Uttar Pradesh, and Jharkhand, the bride's sindoor is still applied with Bhakra sindoor. Let's learn about the significance of Bhakra sindoor.

Mithila Sindoordaan Rituals: In Hinduism, vermilion holds great significance for married women. It is also considered a symbol of marital bliss. According to beliefs, wearing vermilion ensures the long life of women's husbands.

Most people are familiar with red sindoor. However, in Bihar, Uttar Pradesh, Jharkhand, and many parts of the Northeast, women wear Bhakra sindoor during weddings. What is Bhakra sindoor, and why is it considered so special in Mithila weddings?

Applying ghee on the parting of hair and donating vermilion 5 times

In some parts of Uttar Pradesh, Bihar and Jharkhand, during the wedding, when the groom applies sindoor to the bride with Bhakra Sindoor, the elderly women of the house cover the bride's face with a cloth so that no one else can see the bride.

Before the Sindoordaan ceremony, the bride's hair is parted in two, leaving a parting in the middle. Women then apply ghee to the bride's entire parting. The groom then applies Bhakra Sindoor to the bride's hairline five times.

Such customs are mainly seen in Mithila weddings.

Bhakra Sindoor is used prominently in religious ceremonies and puja rituals. This sindoor symbolizes the purity and integrity of relationships.

Unique wedding customs among Maithil Brahmins

Maithil Brahmin weddings don't have the wedding ceremony on the first day and the farewell ceremony on the second. In Mithila, the wedding ceremony lasts four days. The bride and groom are sent off on the fourth day. The groom stays at the bride's home from the first to the fourth day of the wedding. During this time, various rituals are performed.

The bride and groom are not allowed to bathe for four days. During this period, they sleep on the floor. This ritual is known as Chauthari.

Importance of cuisine in Maithili Brahmin weddings

The culinary feast holds special significance in Maithili Brahmin weddings. Dahi-chura, four to five types of pickles, six to seven different vegetables, fish, pakoras, and sponge rasgullas (sweetened biscuits) are among the special offerings for both the wedding party and the family. These dishes make a Mithila wedding even more special.
