In this scam, cyber criminals first collect your information like name, address, date of birth or Aadhaar number. This data is collected with the help of phishing emails, fake websites or leaked databases. Scammers then contact your mobile network operator and ask for a new SIM card, pretending to be you. When the company activates the new SIM of your mobile number, the old SIM is automatically deactivated. In this way the new SIM of your mobile number reaches the scammers.
Now scammers can easily intercept messages, OTPs and bank alerts on your phone. OTP is the most important thing for online account security. When scammers get hold of the SIM of your mobile number, they can easily get this OTP. Apart from this they can change your bank account password and also hack emails. This will empty your bank account in no time.
If suddenly the network in your phone disappears or calls and messages are stopped or a password reset notification appears, be careful. This is an alarm bell. Many times you get a message that your SIM has been activated on another device, a clear indication that your number is in someone else’s possession. In that case contact your mobile operator first.
