As soon as winter begins, a different fragrance dissolves in the air. The coolness of the morning, light sunshine and dew drops give a new look to everything. But amidst all this, its effect on the flowers blooming in our gardens is also clearly visible. Many plants stop growing in the cold, but roses (Rose Plant) If taken care wisely, it shows double growth in this season.

Rose is called the king of flowers, and rightly so. It is beautiful, fragrant and has its own identity in every season. However, its growth slows down a bit in winter, but if you know how to plant and handle it properly, then this season can prove to be the most auspicious for the growth of roses.

Correct way to grow a new rose plant from a flower (Rose Plant Winter Care)

If you are wondering how to plant roses in winter, don’t worry, the answer is very easy. You can grow rose very easily from its branch i.e. cutting. The beginning of winter i.e. from late October to January is considered the best time for planting roses. At this time there is moisture in the soil and the temperature is balanced, due to which new roots are easily formed.

The most important thing is to choose the right branch

  • Cut a 6 to 8-inch long branch from an old, healthy rose plant.
  • The age of the twig should be approximately between 6 months to 1 year.
  • Cut the bottom at an angle (45 degrees) so that roots form quickly.
  • Leave two-three leaves and a withered flower at the top.
  • Before planting this cutting, apply rooting hormone powder or aloe vera gel on its lower part. This speeds up the growth of roots and the plant matures quickly.

Proper preparation of soil and pot

  • 1 part garden soil
  • 1 part cowdung manure or vermicompost
  • 1 part sand

The soil for rose plants should be light, airy and slightly moist. If the soil is heavy or too wet, the roots may rot. Mix this mixture well and fill it in the pot. Keep in mind that there should be a drainage hole at the bottom of the pot so that the water can flow out. Now bury the cutting about two-thirds into the soil and water it lightly so that the soil settles. Keep the pot in a place where there is no strong sunlight but there is light. During very cold days, it will be best if the plant gets light morning sunlight.

When and how much to water the rose plant in winter

Roses do not need much watering in winter. Always keep the soil slightly moist, but not wet.

correct way of watering

  • Water only when the top layer of soil feels dry.
  • It is best to water in the morning.
  • In cold days, light watering once in 2–3 days is sufficient.
  • Do not pour water on the plant, only to the roots so that the leaves do not get damaged.
  • If you water too much, the roots may rot and the plant will become weak.
  • At the same time, if the soil remains too dry, the rose flowers will be smaller and less numerous. Therefore balanced moisture is most important.

When and how to give sunlight to roses

Rose loves sunlight, but is afraid of the cold winds of winter. Therefore, if you want your plant to grow fast and give abundant flowers, then give it 4 to 5 hours of sunlight daily. Sunlight from 9 am to 1 pm is best for roses. Cover the plant or keep it inside in case of extreme cold or frost. Provide open air during the day, but protect the plant from cold air at night.

Right time for fertilizer and nutrition

The rose plant is very fond of nutrients. Its growth may be slow in winter, but when it gets proper nutrition it shows double growth. Apply cowdung manure or vermicompost once a month. Give mustard cake water (2 spoons in 1 liter of water) every 15 days. Spray neem oil to prevent insects from growing in the plant. By doing all this, not only will the plant remain healthy but both the fragrance and color of the rose flowers will improve.

How to take care of the plant after cutting

  • After 3–4 weeks of planting the cutting, new shoots will start emerging from the plant. This is a sign that roots have been formed. At this time, give the plant some sunlight and light fertilizer.
  • When the plant grows up to 1 feet, transfer it to a bigger pot.
  • Always water the roots, not from above.
  • Once every 15 days, lightly scrape the soil of the plant so that air can enter.

Why is it important to take proper care of roses in winter?

Winter season strengthens the roots of roses. If the plant remains healthy during this period, it gives maximum flowers in February-March. That means, the plant that is ready now will make your garden colorful in the coming months. Therefore, do not take rose care lightly in this season. A little hard work, a little wisdom and a lot of love is all that Rose needs.
