Guwahati. The bodies of three missing students of Silchar-based National Institute of Technology (NIT) were recovered from a waterfall in Dima Hasao district of Assam on Sunday. The deceased have been identified as Sarva Krutika (20), Sauharda Rai (20) and Radhika Kumari (19). Police said that Kritika and Souharda were from Uttar Pradesh while Radhika was from Bihar.
According to reports, these students, who were out on a walk on Saturday morning, had fallen into a waterfall near Harangajao village. The body of one of these students was recovered on Saturday evening, while the dead bodies of the other two were found around 12:30 pm on Sunday. Dima Hasao Additional SP Farooq Ahmed said that he received information about an accident in Harangajao on Saturday afternoon, after which two teams of State Disaster Response Force (SDRF) were immediately sent to the spot. After an intensive search, one body was recovered on Saturday evening and two bodies were found underwater on Sunday. All three have been sent to Haflong for post-mortem.
NIT Silchar Director Dilip Kumar Baidya said that all three were first year students. He said that they had left the institute premises without following the campus protocol. Our rule is that every student has to inform the concerned authorities before going out, but unfortunately some students violate this rule and the same happened in this case.
According to the Director of NIT Silchar, since the incident took place in Dima Hasao, the local police is completing the legal formalities. If parents want to collect the dead student's body directly from Haflong, they will be allowed to do so. If they want the bodies to be brought to the NIT campus, we will arrange for that also.
