South Africa As top-order batters dominated India As bowlers to secure a memorable five-wicket win on the fourth day of the second four-day match on Sunday.
Chasing a challenging target of 417 South Africa who were 25 without loss overnight never seemed intimidated and were determined to complete the chase. Jordan Hermann (91 off 123 balls) Lesego Senokwane (77 off 174) Temba Bavuma (59 off 101) Zubayr Hamza (77 off 88) and Connor Esterhuizen (52* off 54) played brilliant innings to guide SA A to 417/5 with three overs to spare completing the highest run chase in A match history.
Needing 392 runs on the day to avoid losing the series 0-2 the South African batters were aggressive yet disciplined. Openers Hermann and Senokwane added 156 runs for the first wicket scoring 114 runs in the first session itself. By lunch SA were 139 without loss as the pitch lost some of its earlier assistance to the pacers.
Hermann impressed with drives through the covers but gave a return catch to Prasidh Krishna after lunch. Senokwane soon fell LBW to Harsh Dubey. The score was 197/2 after 53 overs with Bavuma and Hamza adding a strong 107-run partnership for the third wicket taking South Africa past 300.
Mohammad Siraj missed some time in the field due to a finger injury reducing India’s bowling options temporarily. Bavuma and Hamza continued to dominate but Bavuma was eventually caught off Akash Deep and Hamza was bowled by Prasidh Krishna.
At 352/5 SA needed 65 more runs and Esterhuizen along with Tiaan Van Vuuren (20*) ensured there was no hiccup. Esterhuizen’s quick fifty in 51 balls helped SA finish the chase confidently.
Although India A couldn’t win they gained positives such as Rishabh Pant’s return to fitness Dhruv Jurel showing promise as a batter and bowlers gaining valuable experience ahead of the Test series against South Africa’s main team.
