Jorhat, Nov 10: For the third day in a row, the atmosphere in Titabor has been charged as hundreds of furious locals continue to surround the police station, insisting on justice for a college student whose decomposed remains were discovered in a toilet tank on Monday night.

This horrific murder has sparked significant public outrage, with demonstrators vowing to remain until all responsible parties, including police officials, are held accountable.

In response to the growing unrest, Assam Police has initiated a departmental investigation into the actions of Lakshman Kumar Das, the Officer-in-Charge of Titabor Police Station, amid claims of negligence and misconduct.

Subrajit Bora, the Superintendent of Police in Jorhat, confirmed that Das has been placed on reserve closed status while the inquiry is conducted.

Reports indicate that the victim, an undergraduate student from a prominent college in Titabor, had been missing for four days. Her family reported her disappearance to the police after their own search efforts proved fruitless.

On Sunday, police detained Jagat Singh, an elderly self-identified faith healer, for questioning based on leads. During the interrogation, Singh purportedly admitted to murdering the student and directed officers to his premises, where her decomposed body was discovered in a toilet tank, partially undressed.

This shocking revelation incited immediate outrage among the residents of Titabor. Furious locals vandalized Singh's business and home before heading to the police station, where they have maintained a continuous protest since Saturday night.

Further allegations have surfaced claiming that Singh had been exploiting numerous women under the pretense of operating a religious ashram and performing healing rituals.

The Krishak Mukti Sangram Samiti (KMSS) has called for the death penalty for Singh and the demolition of his illegal ashram. KMSS leader Bidyut Saikia stated, “Jagat Singh has been taking advantage of women for years under the guise of faith healing. We demand he be executed and his ashram be destroyed,” adding that Singh confessed to both raping and murdering the student.

Saikia also accused Officer Das of protecting Singh and mistreating the victim's family, claiming, “When they attempted to file the FIR, the OC insulted them and made disparaging comments about the victim’s character. We demand his immediate suspension.”

In light of the unrest, police have heightened security around the Titabor Police Station and nearby areas to avert further escalation. The victim's body has been sent for a post-mortem examination, and a thorough investigation is currently underway.
