A massive explosion near Delhi’s Red Fort on Monday evening killed nine people and left several others injured. The blast, which occurred in the Chandni Chowk area, completely destroyed a Hyundai i20 and set off panic in one of the city’s busiest localities.

The CCTV footage has helped investigators recreate the car’s final journey before it exploded. The car entered a parking lot next to Red Fort at 3:19 pm and was parked there for more than three hours. The Hyundayi i20 exited the parking area at 6:48 pm.

As per the footage, the vehicle was spotted in Daryaganj market, Red Fort area, Kashmere Gate and near Sunehri Masjid.

Visuals of the car before the explosion purportedly show one person sitting in the driver’s seat, collecting the parking slip.

The car was later seen driving along Chhata Rail Chowk, where it took a U-turn toward Lower Subhash Marg shortly before the explosion. The car had slowed down near a traffic signal when the blast took place, an official familiar with the investigation said. CCTV fooage shows a masked man driving the Hyundayi i20 minutes before the explosion.

The explosion was powerful enough to obliterate the car instantly, leaving no survivors among the three occupants. Eyewitnesses described a horrifying scene. Several people were flung into the air by the impact, multiple nearby vehicles caught fire and windows in surrounding buildings were shattered. Police received the first emergency call about three minutes after the blast.

Union Home Minister Amit Shah, who visited the site on Monday night, said teams from the National Investigation Agency (NIA), National Security Guard (NSG) and the forensic department have begun a detailed probe. He confirmed the death toll and added that investigators are keeping all possibilities open, including the angle of a potential terror link.

Two men who previously owned the i20 have been detained for questioning. Police are also tracing the vehicle’s complete ownership history.
