IBM has announced the development of a new quantum computing chip, named "Loon." The company says this chip is a major step toward developing quantum computers that can be used for real-world purposes by 2029.
What is a quantum computer?
Quantum computers are computers that can solve extremely complex problems very quickly, problems that would take ordinary computers thousands of years to solve. However, these computers face a significant error problem. Due to the uncertainty of quantum technology, errors can easily occur.
IBM's New Approach
Major companies like Google, Amazon, and IBM are working to correct these errors. In 2021, IBM proposed a new approach: apply algorithms similar to those used to improve signals in mobile networks to quantum computers. To achieve this, they planned to combine ordinary and quantum chips. However, this makes creating quantum chips a little more difficult, as they now require not only quantum bits (qubits) but also new types of connections between them.
Where is this chip made?
According to IBM, the Loon chip was developed at the Albany Nanotech Complex in New York. This location is considered one of the most advanced chip factories in the world.
Future Plans
Currently, Loon is in its early stages, and IBM has not announced when the public or developers will be able to test it. However, the company has announced another chip, "Nighthawk," which will be available by the end of this year. IBM believes that Nighthawk can outperform ordinary computers in some tasks by next year. The company is working with researchers and startups to share its code openly so that anyone can test it. "We believe that quantum computers will offer breakthroughs in many areas in the future," said IBM director Jay Gambetta. "But we want this to be more than just news, but to be a community that tests the code itself and finds real solutions."
