In a heart-wrenching incident that shocked residents of West Bengal’s South 24 Parganas district, the body of a first-year law student was found hanging in the chambers of a local lawyer in Kakdwip on Wednesday evening, following which the police registered a case of unnatural death and launched a search for the absconding lawyer.

The 20-year-old victim, a resident of Gandhinagar, who was pursuing LLB from a nearby institute, regularly visited the Pratapaditya Gram Panchayat chamber for studies, her family revealed. She had left home around 9 am on Wednesday, but a call from the lawyer’s office in the evening informed her family about the horrific incident – her body, clad in salwar kameez, was hanging from the ceiling fan with a dupatta around her neck.

Kakdweep police under Sundarban police district reached the spot and recovered a bag containing a handwritten love letter allegedly written by the lawyer, indicating a love relationship turned sour due to discord. A senior official said, “This letter indicates emotional stress from their relationship—which is probably why they took this step.” He also mentioned the lawyer’s anxious phone call to the family before he disappeared. The victim’s relatives filed a formal complaint against the 35-year-old lawyer, alleging coercion and betrayal, leading to charges of abetment of suicide under section 306/34 of the IPC.

The viscera report of the body, which has been taken for post-mortem to Alipore’s SSKM hospital, is awaited to confirm hanging—initial investigation has ruled out external injuries, but forensic teams are investigating any foul play. Sunderbans SP confirmed, “We have registered a case against the accused, who is absconding since the incident. Raids are underway at his locations in Kakdwip and Kolkata.” They also checked the dog squad and CCTV cameras.

Panic spread across the densely populated areas of Kakdweep—neighbors gathered in the chamber and demanded a thorough investigation into the lawyer’s influence on the aspiring jurist. A classmate lamented, “She was so smart and dedicated—it became painful to come daily for notes.” Women’s rights groups condemned the exploitation of patrons and urged a gender-sensitive investigation amid rising student crisis cases in Bengal.

X ने आक्रोश व्यक्त किया: “काकद्वीप का आतंक—वकील का चैंबर अपराध स्थल तक? उसे अभी पकड़ो!” An angry man wrote in a viral post (5 thousand likes) tagging @MamataOfficial. This is reminiscent of the recent scams in South 24 Parganas, which has intensified demands for improvements in campus security.

As the forensic investigation unfolds and the search operation intensifies, Kakdweep grapples with grief—questioning whether the lessons of love proved fatal. Police have concluded: Whether it is suicide or sabotage, the truth will come out. For this anonymous dreamer, justice hangs in the balance.
