Just days before the release of ‘Masti 4’ a film that reunites Vivek Oberoi Ritesh Deshmukh and Aftab Shivdasani after years Vivek has opened up about a chapter from his early career that still haunts him. The actor who is now busy promoting the upcoming comedy revisited a moment from 2002 when he came close to losing his life during the shoot of ‘Road’.
The memory resurfaced during an interview with Mashable India where Vivek recounted how a late-night journey through Rajasthan turned into one of the most frightening nights of his life.
What exactly happened during the ‘road’ shoot?
Vivek shared that the shoot was taking place in Rajasthan and the team was travelling from Bikaner to Jaisalmer. It was late in the night and despite the beautifully paved roads visibility was low. Out of instinct and unease Vivek repeatedly warned the driver to slow down.
“I told the driver at least 15 to 20 times to drive slowly. Kam dikh raha hai dheere chalao” he recalled.
He was seated in the front trying to rest unaware that the night was about to take a horrific turn.
How did the accident almost turn fatal?
Vivek described the moment everything changed in a split second. “Achanak ek bada haadsa hua ek zor daar awaaz aayi” he said. A camel cart suddenly appeared in front of their vehicle. The cart was loaded with long iron rods and the impact sent the rods crashing through the windshield.
The rods pierced the vehicle with such force that they would have gone straight through his body had he been sitting upright.
“If my seat had been straight those rods would have gone inside me” Vivek said. He was pinned down by the rods and unable to get out but miraculously he survived with no major injury.
That night changed him forever. “Mai lagbhag mar hi gaya tha… after that I decided I will never travel at night again (I had almost died… after that I decided I would never travel at night again)” he added.
Did it affect him later in life?
Yes deeply. Vivek said he faced a similar situation later with another hired driver who refused to slow down despite warnings. He eventually asked the driver to stop for a washroom break walked around the car took the keys and left the man there. The earlier incident had permanently altered his tolerance for reckless driving.
The 2002 film ‘Road’ starred Vivek Oberoi alongside Antara Mali and Manoj Bajpayee. But the memories associated with its shoot continue to stay with him.
Upcoming projects of Vivek Oberoi
Vivek is now looking forward to the release of Milap Zaveri’s ‘Masti 4’ which hits theatres on 21 November 2025. The film brings back the beloved trio Vivek Ritesh and Aftab after a long gap promising nostalgia humour and the same chaotic chemistry the franchise is known for.
