Biswanath/Nalbari, Nov 15: The 150th birth anniversary of the tribal freedom fighter Birsa Munda was commemorated in Assam on Saturday with significant events taking place in Borgang, Biswanath, and Khatikuchi, Nalbari. This day, recognized across the nation, honors Munda’s revolutionary spirit and his unwavering struggle against British colonialism, as well as his advocacy for the rights of indigenous peoples.

In Borgang, the event was spearheaded by Union Minister Sarbananda Sonowal, who paid homage to Birsa Munda with floral tributes. He was welcomed by MP Ranjit Dutta, Behali MLA Diganta Ghatowal, Bishwanath MLA Promod Barthakur, Zilla Parishad Chairperson Sunita Tanti, District Commissioner Simanta Kumar Das, and other senior officials.

Sonowal commenced the program at the Srimanta Sankardev Auditorium by lighting a ceremonial lamp in front of Munda’s portrait. The Prime Minister’s address from Narmada district in Gujarat was streamed live, and prior to this, Sonowal paid respects at the statue of Birsa Munda located at Behali Tiniali.

While addressing the attendees, he remarked, “Birsa Munda was not just a leader in the fight against colonial oppression but also a champion for the rights and culture of indigenous communities. His legacy has elevated him to a revered status among tribal populations.”

He emphasized that the central government is committed to the welfare and empowerment of tribal communities, stating, “People now have the chance to succeed and can pursue their aspirations with confidence.”

Referencing President Droupadi Murmu’s ascent from an Adivasi background to the highest constitutional office, he noted, “This is a testament to the government’s efforts to uplift marginalized communities.”

In Nalbari’s Khatikuchi, a commemorative event was organized by the district administration, featuring Cabinet Minister Jayanta Malla Baruah, GMDC Chairman Narayan Deka, Nalbari DC Nibedan Das Patowary, Zilla Parishad President Gitumoni Baishya, and other community leaders.

Throughout Assam, various cultural events, exhibitions, and community gatherings took place, celebrating the lasting legacy of Birsa Munda.
