Mumbai CNG pipeline: Public transport and cab services including auto rickshaws and taxis are likely to be affected across Mumbai as the citys main CNG pipeline was damaged due to reasons that have not yet been made public. What caused the CNG pipeline damage? According to Mahanagar Gas Limited (MGL) which supplies compressed natural gas (CNG) in Mumbai the main pipeline sustained third-party damage affecting CNG supply at its City Gate Station in Wadala. Due to third-party damage in the main gas supply pipeline of GAIL (Gas Authority of India) inside RCF (Rashtriya Chemicals and Fertiliser) compound the gas supply to MGLs City Gate Station (CGS) at Wadala has been affected MGL said in a statement. Why public transport may be affected across Mumbai? Notably MGL-supplied CNG is used by a major chunk of cab services including autorickshaws and taxis operated by cab-hailing apps like Ola and Uber and also buses run by public transport undertakings. The damage to CNG pipeline is expected to affect the these services across Mumbai and its adjacent areas. CNG stations across Mumbai Thane and Navi Mumbai including the dedicated CNG stations for public transport undertakings may not operate due to stoppage of gas supply in CGS Wadala and thereby the MGL pipeline network MGL said while advising its industrial and commercial customers in the affected areas to switch to alternate fuel. When will services be restored? MGL said it has prioritised supply to residences to ensure uninterrupted supply of piped natural gas supply to homes continues however it did not give any timeline of when the CNG supply will be restored or elaborate on the reasons leading to the damage in the critical pipeline. Gas supplies across MGLs network will normalise once the damage is rectified and supply is restored to CGS Wadala. Inconvenience is regretted the company added.
