Indian cricket captain Shubman Gill will not participate further in the first Test match against South Africa at Eden Gardens due to a neck injury sustained while batting on the second day. He was subsequently hospitalized for evaluation.

On Saturday, during the second day of the match, Gill was transported from the stadium to a private medical facility for scans.

He came to bat after the dismissal of Washington Sundar but faced only three deliveries before leaving the field.

After hitting a sweep shot for a boundary, he immediately grasped his neck, indicating discomfort.

BCCI Provides Updates on Gill's Condition

Following the incident, the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) released a statement confirming Gill's condition, stating, "Shubman Gill is experiencing a neck spasm and is currently being monitored by our medical team."

A subsequent update from the BCCI indicated that he is "under observation in the hospital". The statement elaborated, "Captain Shubman Gill suffered a neck injury on Day 2 of the Test against South Africa in Kolkata. He was taken to the hospital for further examination after the day's play concluded. He will not continue in the Test match and will remain under the care of the BCCI medical team."

Rishabh Pant Steps Up as Captain

With Gill sidelined, Rishabh Pant took over the captaincy for South Africa's second innings. Under his leadership, the spin trio of Ravindra Jadeja, Kuldeep Yadav, and Axar Patel put the hosts in a strong position, with Jadeja claiming four wickets, Yadav two, and Patel one, leaving South Africa struggling at 93/7 with a 63-run lead.

Recap of the First Innings

Earlier, on the first day, South Africa batted first after winning the toss. A five-wicket haul from Jasprit Bumrah restricted them to just 159 runs, despite a solid opening partnership between Aiden Markram and Ryan Rickelton.

India, however, faced challenges as Simon Harmer took four wickets and Marco Jansen added three, limiting them to 189/9 and giving South Africa a narrow 30-run lead.
