Your washing machine might build up with dirt quickly but there's one unexpected item you could use to clear away dirt.

Getting into the nooks and crannies of your machine can be tricky but by using this one item you can make your machine look shiny and new.

Good Housekeeping says: "Clean the dispenser drawer: Most newer machines have removable dispensers, so pop them out, take them apart and rinse them well under hot water.

"Use a soft toothbrush to dislodge any stuck-on gunk. Wipe dry, reassemble and reinsert them into the machine.

"If they are still wet, wipe them with a cloth or leave them open to thoroughly air dry."

By using a toothbrush, you can clean hard to reach areas and ensure your machine won't gather any build-up.

But this is not the only tip you can follow, it also recommends setting an extra rinse and spin.

Once the cleaning cycle is done, run another rinse and spin just to make sure any traces of bleach or particle remnants are completely washed away.

One of the most noticeable areas where your machine can quickly become dirty is in the rubber drum.

You should make sure to regularly wipe and dry the rubber seal and drum.

Good Housekeeping says: "If you have a front-loader, wipe the rubber gasket clean and dry thoroughly to prevent mold.

"Wipe any moisture from the drum and door or lid, too, or leave it open to air dry."

While you might not clean the inside of your machine often, it's a job you should look to add to your cleaning routine more often.

By cleaning it often, you won't have to face any complications when it comes to doing your washing.
