New Delhi: Pakistan will begin its home T20 tri-series against Zimbabwe on Tuesday. The teams morale is high after defeating Sri Lanka 3-0 in the ODIs. Salman Agha will now assume the captaincy in the T20 format and Pakistan will want to start the tournament with a win. Several important decisions will need to be made regarding the team composition especially regarding the wicketkeeper opener and spin department.
Opening slot: Will Sahibzada Farhan become the wicketkeeper?
The PCB has included both Farhan and Usman Khan in the wicketkeeper selection for the tri-series. Since Usman Khan is a top-order batsman it makes more sense for Farhan to be given the wicketkeeping duties. Farhan has scored 666 runs in 30 T20I innings and was Pakistans most successful batsman in the last Asia Cup.
Sam and Babar: The Batting Backbone
Sam Ayub has cemented his place in the batting order with his all-round performances in recent matches—108 runs at a strike rate of 150 and 2 wickets. He will open alongside Farhan while Babar Azam will maintain his permanent position at number 3. Babar has scored 1245 runs here averaging 44.46 and striking at 127.17.
Will Fakhar Zaman anchor the middle order?
Pakistans middle order remains unstable. Salman Agha hasnt been consistently effective and Hasan Nawazs form has declined. In such a situation giving Fakhar Zaman a chance at number 4 could be beneficial for the team.
Interestingly Fakhar Zamans average and strike rate at number 4 are better than at the top of the order so he can play an attacking role in the middle overs.
Possible Middle Order and All-Rounder Structure
Captain Salman Agha will lead the middle order while power-hitter Abdul Samad could assume the finishers role. Mohammad Nawaz is currently in excellent form—26 wickets and 310 runs in 2025—so he will be the teams primary all-rounder. Faheem Ashraf will also play alongside him as a fast-bowling all-rounder.
Bowling Attack: The Lethal Shaheen-Naseem Pair
Usman Tariq performed well against South Africa but Pakistan will prefer Abrar Ahmed in the spin department. His 31 wickets in 24 T20Is and an economy of 6.77 make him Pakistans premier spin option.Shaheen Afridi and Naseem Shah will play key roles in the pace attack. Shaheen will initiate swing with the new ball while Naseem can make an impact in all three phases.
