India vs South Africa: Nitish Reddy could play Guwahati Test
18 Nov 2025
According to a report by The Times of India, the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) has summoned all-rounder Nitish Kumar Reddy to join the squad ahead of the 2nd Test against South Africa in Guwahati.
The Andhra Pradesh cricketer was earlier released from the squad and asked to participate in India A's ODI against South Africa A.
However, due to uncertainty over Shubman Gill's fitness, Reddy has been called back.
Reddy's early return
Return
As mentioned, Reddy will rejoin the squad earlier than expected and participate in an optional training session at Eden Gardens on Tuesday.
With Gill injuring his neck in the Kolkata Test, Reddy has been summoned as a back-up option.
The all-rounder, who featured in the first two List A matches for India A against South Africa, will miss the third.
Will Gill recover in time?
Recovery update
Gill, who suffered a neck spasm in Kolkata, has been discharged from the hospital. He will likely travel with the team to Guwahati on Wednesday.
The BCCI officials and medical staff are monitoring the Indian Test captain. It remains to be seen if he will play the 2nd Test.
In his absence, vice-captain Rishabh Pant will lead Team India.
Gill's injury and hospital admission
Injury details
On Day 2 in Kolkata, Gill came to bat after Washington Sundar's dismissal. He scored a boundary off spinner Simon Harmer.
Upon completing the shot, the Indian skipper held his neck in visible pain. He removed his helmet and called for medical help.
After a brief assessment, he was taken off the field to avoid further aggravation of his condition.
India didn't take any chances and sent in a replacement batter before Gill was hospitalized.
Gill's absence hurts India in Kolkata
Absence
Gill's absence was felt in the final innings as India, chasing just 124 runs, faltered. They succumbed to the deteriorating Kolkata pitch and fell to spinners.
In what appeared to be a modest run-chase, the hosts folded for 93. Only Washington Sundar (31) and Axar Patel (26) scored 20-plus runs.
With a 30-run win, South Africa lead the two-match series 1-0.
Meanwhile, Reddy's all-round skills could also bolster the side.
