New Delhi: Pakistans star cricketer Babar Azam has been punished for violating the ICC Code of Conduct during the third ODI against Sri Lanka after he angrily smashed the the stumps with his bat after losing his wicket. The incident occurred in the 21st over of Pakistans innings and was promptly reported by the match officials.
The on-field umpires Alex Wharf and Rashid Riaz along with third umpire Sharfuddoula Ibne Shahid and fourth umpire Faisal Afridi filed the complaint under Article 2.2 of the ICC Code of Conduct which deals with abuse of cricket equipment or clothing ground equipment or fixtures and fittings. The incident was handled by match referee Ali Naqvi who recommended the penalty according to the ICCs disciplinary rules.
Babar Azam accepted the charge and penalty
Babar accepted the charge and penalty without opting for a formal hearing. As a result he has been fined 10 per cent of his match fee and one demerit point. This marks Babars first demerit point in the past two years.
Level 1 breaches carry a minimum penalty of an official reprimand a maximum penalty of 50 per cent of a player’s match fee and one or two demerit points ICC said in a media release.
If a player has a total of four or more demerit points within a 24-month span those points are converted into suspension points which then lead to a ban. Two suspension points result in a suspension from either one Test match or two ODIs or two T20Is depending on which format the player is scheduled to play next.
Demerits points are removed after 24 months
The demerit points stay on a players or support staff members disciplinary record for 24 months from the date they are issued after which they are removed.
Babar smashed a century in the second ODI against Sri Lanka and ended his century drought in international cricket. He scored an unbeaten 102 in a successful chase of 289 and was also named the player-of-the-match award for his impressive performance.
