A massive Manchester United supporter who is fighting for his life has received a heartfelt message from Mason Mount. He recorded a video message for Lewis Rimmer's wife, Sarah, and their two daughters, Amelia and Maddison.
That follows an incident involving a Range Rover that caused 'life-changing' injuries. He remains 'critically ill' in hospital after being placed in an induced coma, according to his close friend Andy Tonge, who spoke to the Manchester Evening News.
Tonge described the gesture as 'lovely' for the family. The Bolton News quoted him saying: "They're big Manchester United supporters, so this was lovely to receive, what a guy."
Mount offered his sympathies and expressed his sorrow after learning about Rimmer's situation. He also said that "everyone at Manchester United is thinking of them and sending all their love."
A fundraising effort launched by friends to support the family has already raised over £100,000 in contributions. Tonge told the MEN: "The incident seems to have really struck a chord with people.
"It happened during half term, and it's shocked so many because it could so easily have been a child who might not have been as strong as Lewis is proving to be. Many feel that Lewis' strength and fight over the last few weeks is nothing short of remarkable. The fact that it took place at a local supermarket, used by so many of us, has created an even stronger sense of, 'This could have happened to any one of us.'"
Tonge revealed: "Lewis, unfortunately, is still critically ill and remains in an induced coma, three weeks on. Sarah and the family have been by his side every single day, and the fundraiser has genuinely lifted them.
"Knowing that so many people care and want to support them has made a real difference. When the time comes to make necessary changes to their home and daily life, they'll be able to focus on Lewis without the added pressure of financial worries."
He continued: "So many people have donated, offered direct support to the family, or sent positive thoughts and energy to Lewis. Tonge further stated: "As a group of friends, we're pulling together to support them, and we all think it's just incredible.
"Personally, it makes me proud to come from the northwest. This is our community at its very best, rallying around an ordinary bloke and his beautiful family. It's tough to put into words and convey that gratitude."
