New Delhi: Star India cricketer Abhinav Mukund reflects on Shubman Gills captaincy and says although he has potential to lead the side but he currently under excessive pressure and India should think bout adopting split captaincy. While other players have been rotated across formats Gill has featured consistently even returning for the home series opener against South Africa a workload that has now started to show its impact. On Day 2 of the first Test at Eden Gardens against South Africa Gill sustained a neck injury and had to be taken to the hospital which ruled him out for the remainder of the match. In Gills absence India collapsed for just 93 while chasing 124 allowing secure a thrilling 30-run victory Mukund urged the BCCI to reconsider making Gill the all-format captain While speaking on The Great Indian Cricket Show on Doordarshan Mukund urged the BCCI to reconsider making Gill the all-format captain stating that pressure on the young batter is becoming difficult to handle. Mukund delivered a strong message to Ajit Agarkar and his team urging them to opt for split captaincy. I think Shubman has it in him to become an all-format captain but I don’t think India should have an all-format captain anymore. Split captaincy is a smart move. Shubman Gill has been given the responsibility to take on the mantle in Tests and he will be under big pressure Mukund said. This is a crucial series and the England series was a big confidence booster for India Mukund added. Gill was appointed Indias ODI captain during the Australia series In October Gill was also handed Indias ODI captaincy keeping the 2027 World Cup in mind leading to talk that the BCCI could also give him the T20I captaincy after the 2026 T20 World Cup. Gill was named India T20I vice-captain in the shortest format two months ago ahead of the Asia Cup. In the latest update Gill was released from the hospital on Sunday November 16 following Indias defeat in the first Test. However the team management has not confirmed his availability in the second Test as South Africa seeks only their second series win on Indian soil.
