Delhi University, DU News: There's some good news for Delhi University students. DU's security upgrade project, which has been pending for years, is about to become a reality. The university has approved a tender worth approximately ₹9 crore (approximately $1.9 billion), and soon, over 700 new CCTV cameras will be installed across the North Campus, South Campus, East Campus, and West Campus. Now, whether girls leave the library late at night or boys sit in the canteen late at night, every corner will be under surveillance.
What's the current situation?
So far, the CCTV system on DU's vast campus is quite poor. Only 25 cameras are working on the 198-acre North Campus. These cameras are installed only around the Arts Faculty, Central Library, and Proctor's Office. The South Campus spans 64 acres, but only 60 cameras are installed, and around 100 new ones are being installed. The open areas, streets, parking lots, and gates were all in complete darkness. This year, during the DUSU elections, the Delhi Police temporarily installed 30 cameras, but they were shut down as soon as the elections were over. The old cameras have been out of order for years.
Footage of many incidents was not found
Following the incidents that occurred on the DU campus in the past few years, the DU administration hastily decided to install cameras. In 2024, the DUSU office was vandalized, but no footage was found. In 2011, a girl was murdered near her college, and the investigation in that case was also stalled due to the lack of CCTV. After the Red Fort blast, the university held a meeting with the Delhi Police and decided that there would be no further delay. Students had been complaining for years that the campus was unsafe, and now their demand was finally being met.
What will the new cameras replace?
The more than 700 cameras that will be installed now will replace old, out-of-order cameras and cover new areas. Every street, every parking lot, every gate, outside the library, and around the canteen will be under surveillance. If anyone harasses, steals, assaults, or is seen roaming around suspiciously, they can be caught immediately. Girls will be free from worry if they go out alone at night. If any incident occurs, footage will be available within two minutes of investigation. With evidence, the case will become stronger.
When will the cameras be installed?
The university has not yet disclosed a timeline, but the tender has been passed, and work is scheduled to begin soon. It is expected that most of the cameras will be installed by the first semester of 2026. Maintenance will also be carefully monitored to ensure that past mistakes are not repeated.
