The Chase presenter Bradley Walsh found himself exclaiming "this is extraordinary" after a contestant "made TV history."
The popular ITV quiz programme returned to screens on Tuesday (November 19) for another instalment, with Bradley welcoming four fresh challengers. Viewers watched as the host introduced contestants Eileen, Andreas, Amanda and Merrick, who competed for the coveted cash prize.
This week, the four faced quiz expert Paul Sinha, known as The Sinnerman, who was determined to give the players a tough challenge. However, proceedings took an astonishing twist during Amanda's round.
Prior to competing, Amanda was questioned about her plans should she secure a substantial sum. She disclosed that she had promised to purchase her son some "ridiculously expensive" Balenciaga trainers, reports the Mirror.
An astonished Bradley remarked: "That's really quite high end," to which Amanda responded: "Yeah £800." A shocked Bradley exclaimed: "I beg your pardon?!"
In her cash-builder round, Amanda secured £4,000. The Chaser subsequently presented her with a higher offer of £50,000 and a lower sum of £800 for the trainers.
Following consultation with her teammates, Amanda opted for the lower figure. The decision proved wise as Amanda successfully defeated The Sinnerman and secured her place in the final chase, bringing £800 with her.
However, according to Bradley, Amanda created television history on the programme. Once the round concluded, he announced: "This is extraordinary.
"I think this is the first time ever in 15 years someone has come on for something specific and actually got the amount they needed, specifically for that amount, and then got through."
He added: "That's a funny old journey that!" Paul then chimed in: "I mean, it's television history, but it's a terrible indictment of the state of society," as the audience laughed along.
In the final chase, Eileen, Amanda and Merrick played against Paul to try and win their share of £6,000. However, their score of 15 proved insufficient to secure victory on the quiz show. The Sinnerman caught the team with 46 seconds still on the clock.
The Chase airs Monday to Friday at 5pm on ITV1.
