OpenAI has launched a new Group Chat feature in ChatGPT, allowing users to plan, discuss, and collaborate with friends, family, or office teams within a single chat thread. The feature is currently in pilot mode in New Zealand, Taiwan, South Korea, and Japan. OpenAI says the rollout will expand to more countries based on user feedback from these regions.

Enhanced collaboration with AI
With this update, ChatGPT is being positioned not just as a chatbot but as a collaborative AI assistant. In group chats, the AI understands the flow of conversations and responds only when needed instead of replying to every message. Users can also tag ChatGPT to pull it into specific parts of a discussion. Additionally, the AI can now react to messages with emojis, making interactions feel more natural.

How to start a group chat
Users can begin a group chat by tapping the new people icon in the app. ChatGPT will generate a shareable link that can be sent to friends, family members, or work groups. Each group can have up to 20 conversation threads for better organization. If a private chat is turned into a group, ChatGPT creates a separate copy to keep earlier conversations confidential.
