Indian captain Shubman Gill who missed the second innings of the first Test against South Africa in Kolkata will also not play the crucial second Test in Guwahati as reported by NDTV. Gill hurt his neck during the match at Eden Gardens and could not bat during Indias chase of 124.
India lost the game by 30 runs and his absence made a big difference. The second Test of the two-match series begins on Friday and although Gill really wanted to play and even travelled to Guwahati he has been ruled out.
In his absence 24-year-old top-order batter Sai Sudharsan will join the playing XI. Sudharsan made his Test debut in England in June and has played five Tests so far scoring 273 runs at an average of 30.33. His most recent Test was at home against the West Indies in October where he made 39 and 87. He was included in the squad for the South Africa series but did not play in the first Test.
Shubman Gill was taken to a hospital in Kolkata after injuring his neck on Day 2 of the first Test against South Africa but he was later allowed to go home. Even though he may be medically fit now playing a full five-day match could worsen the injury and keep him out for a longer period.
Shubman Gill who missed most of the first Test in Kolkata because of his neck injury travelled to Guwahati with the team without a neck brace ahead of the second Test against South Africa starting on November 22.
As per PTI Shubman Gill likely needs around 10 more days to heal completely and then finish his rehab before he can play again. The sensible choice for the selectors would be to keep him out of the ODI series starting on November 30 in Ranchi. Since the series is not very important he can rest and aim to come back for the T20 matches against South Africa.
However with his ODI deputy Shreyas Iyer still not fully recovered from his injury Gill does not want a third captain option in KL Rahul or Axar Patel even if it would be only a temporary arrangement.
