Samsung has taken a big step towards making digital education more effective for students in Tamil Nadu. India’s largest consumer electronics brand Samsung launched a new education initiative ‘Digiarivu – Empowering Students through Technology’ with United Nations Global Compact Network India (UN GCNI). The program was inaugurated by Tamil Nadu Government School Education Minister Dr. It was done by Anbil Mahesh Poymozhi.
10 government schools in Kanchipuram and Ranipet districts have been selected under the Digiarivu initiative, and more than 3,000 students will directly benefit in the first phase. Through this initiative, Samsung will improve school infrastructure, strengthen digital and STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering and Mathematics) education and train teachers on modern technologies.
The main objective of this new venture of Samsung is to change the way of education in schools.
It will involve upgradation of infrastructure based on the concept of ‘Building as Learning Aid’ (BALA), which will provide students with hands-on learning opportunities. Along with this, necessary materials will also be provided to increase digital skills among students.
The initiative includes activity-based learning based on STEM themes, modern teaching techniques, workshops and teacher training sessions. Libraries will be set up with sports kits from Samsung, as well as books required for Tamil, English and competitive exams.
Career guidance series, educationist sessions and health awareness camps will be conducted for the students of class 12 under Digiarivu initiative. Schools will celebrate various important days, activities and ceremonies with the participation of community members.
SH Yoon, Managing Director, Samsung Chennai Plant said, “Access to technology opens doors of opportunities for more students. Through Digiarivu, we are creating a digital learning environment. This will increase students’ curiosity and enable them to actively participate in India’s fast-growing digital economy.”
He added that the company is contributing not only in technology but also in the empowerment of teachers and development of the local community.
“Regardless of background, every child should have access to quality digital education,” he said.
UN GCNI Executive Director Ratnesh Jha said, “Digiarivu is a great example of how business and society can work together to make a difference. This initiative is an important step towards achieving the UN’s ‘Sustainable Development Goals’ (SDGs).”
Apart from DigiRivu, Samsung is training around 5,000 students in Tamil Nadu in high technology fields like Artificial Intelligence, IoT, Big Data, Coding and Programming through the Samsung Innovation Campus (SIC) programme. This is helping to increase the employability of the students.
