During a recent operation at the Kashmir Times office in Jammu, authorities seized a cache of weapons including AK rifle ammunition, pistol rounds, and three grenades. The State Investigation Agency (SIA) conducted the raid based on allegations that the publication was disseminating materials harmful to the sovereignty of the nation. Following the registration of a case against the publication and its promoters, SIA officials thoroughly searched the premises and computers of the newspaper.
The SIA has filed a First Information Report (FIR) against Kashmir Times for publishing articles that allegedly threaten public order. In October 2020, the Jammu and Kashmir administration had previously sealed the newspaper's office located in the Srinagar press enclave. In a statement, Kashmir Times claimed that the raid was yet another attempt to silence them, asserting that they are being targeted for continuing their work. They emphasized that in a time when critical voices are diminishing, they remain one of the few independent outlets willing to speak truth to power. The accusations against them are seen as attempts to intimidate, defame, and ultimately silence their voice.
In response to the raid, Deputy Chief Minister Surinder Singh Choudhary stated that actions should only be taken in cases where wrongdoing is evident, rather than as a means of exerting pressure. He remarked that if any wrongdoing has occurred, appropriate action should follow, but cautioned against actions taken solely for intimidation purposes.
