South Africas plans for their upcoming ODI and T20 series against India have changed sharply as fast bowler Kagiso Rabada has been ruled out. The experienced pacer injured his ribs during a training session before the ongoing Test matches and will return home for recovery. His absence is a big setback for South Africa especially as they try to manage player workloads and strengthen their fast-bowling options.
The white-ball part of the tour begins with a three-match ODI series
The white-ball part of the tour begins with a three-match ODI series from November 30 to December 6 followed by five T20Is starting on December 9. Although losing Rabada is a big blow Anrich Nortje’s return gives South Africa a much-needed lift. Nortje has been named in the T20I squad marking his first appearance for South Africa in 16 months. His last game was the T20 World Cup final against India before repeated injuries kept him out for a long break.
South Africa has also made a few interesting selection decisions
South Africa has also made a few interesting selection decisions. Quinton de Kock who recently came out of ODI retirement is back in the squad after an excellent run against Pakistan where he topped the scoring charts with 232 runs in three innings. His return brings experience to a batting lineup that has seen plenty of changes this year.
However there were some unexpected omissions. Lhuan de Pretorius the second-highest run-scorer in the ODI series against Pakistan has been left out. The team has not given an official reason but the move suggests a preference for bringing back senior players for the India tour.
Aiden Markram who led the Test team and was rested for the Pakistan T20Is will return as captain in the shortest format. He has been picked in both squads and is expected to be a key figure for a young batting unit.
South Africa’s spin department has received a boost too with Keshav Maharaj returning after missing the Pakistan tour. His presence adds control and variation in the middle overs something the team will find useful in conditions similar to the subcontinent during the India series.
