Brussels sprouts may have a reputation as the nation's most hated vegetable, but that could all change with one simple twist. According to TV chef James Martin, there's a single ingredient that has the power to convert even the most stubborn sceptics.

His clever addition transforms their flavour, adding richness and depth without any complicated preparation. The Saturday Morning host shared: "Crispy bacon could be key to converting sprout haters. The recipe is super quick and easy too." Here's how to make it below.

This recipe, courtesy of BBC Food, serves eight people, making it great for festive parties or family dinners. The Brussels sprouts take less than 30 minutes to prepare and between 10 and 30 minutes to cook.

James Martin's recipe for Brussels sprouts

Ingredients

  • Salt to taste
  • 900g Brussels sprouts
  • Two teaspoons of olive oil
  • 225g of pancetta, cut into cubes

Method

To begin, bring a large saucepan of salted water to a steady boil, then tip in the sprouts. Let them cook gently for eight to 10 minutes, or until they're tender enough to pierce with a knife.

Drain them thoroughly in a colander so no excess water remains. Meanwhile, place a frying pan over a high heat and allow it to warm until piping hot.

Pour in the olive oil, scatter in the pancetta cubes, and fry them for five to seven minutes, stirring occasionally, until they turn crisp, golden and wonderfully fragrant.

Once the pancetta is ready, add the drained sprouts straight to the pan and toss everything together so the vegetables absorb the savoury richness.

Allow the mixture to heat through for a minute or two, then serve immediately while hot for the best flavour and texture.
