South Africa’s Senuran Muthusamy stole the show on Day 2 of the second Test against India at the Barsapara Stadium scoring his first Test century and helping his team push their overnight total from 247/6 to 489 by the end of the innings. He said it was a special feeling to reach his hundred in front of a large crowd and was happy to make a strong contribution.
Muthusamy who recently won the ICC Player of the Month award was well supported by wicketkeeper Kyle Verreynne who made 45 off 122 balls and Marco Jansen who smashed 93 off 91 deliveries before narrowly missing out on his maiden hundred.
Speaking to the broadcasters after the match the batting all-rounder who scored 109 runs from 206 balls at No. 7 said It was a really special moment in front of this full house. Im just glad that I could contribute to the team and really put some runs on the board in the first innings which is always important.
When he was asked about his approach while batting with six wickets already down he said It was just to build partnerships and to really try and extend the innings and then score runs in between. I think Scholesy (Verreynne) did really well today and Marco was special. And the other guys chipped in as well which was awesome.
Jansen batted brilliantly hitting six fours and an impressive seven sixes troubling the Indian bowlers. His big hits took him close to a century but he was unlucky to be dismissed by Kuldeep Yadav just before reaching 100.
Muthusamy praised the tall batsman and admired his skill at hitting sixes saying Oh it was incredible. I had the best seat in the house. That was special. Special ball striking. It was fantastic from him. It was awesome.
The batting all-rounder escaped an lbw appeal after a review saved him. He took some time to talk with Verreynne before signaling for the review. He said he felt relieved when the replay on the big screen showed the ball had just grazed his glove before hitting the pad.
Around the noise and the emotion I was just really disappointed. And when I was standing with Scholesy I said ‘You know it might’ve just brushed my glove I think I might be okay.’ And then when it came up on the DRS it was fantastic that there was a little scratch on it. I did kind of feel something but I think just with the emotion and the disappointment of being given out it didnt register straightaway until a little bit later he added.
