Shubman Gill Left Out of ODI Squad vs SA; When Shall We See Him Play for India Again?
MENSXP November 24, 2025 03:40 PM

India’s ODI series vs South Africa starts on November 30 while the T20Is begin on December 9 and shall end on December 19. As far as the ODIs are concerned, neither India’s skipper nor vice-captain shall play. Shubman Gill is yet to recover from the neck spasm he sustained during the 1st Test vs South Africa in Kolkata. Shreyas Iyer is still recovering from the injury he had in the 3rd ODI vs Australia a month back. KL Rahul has been named skipper while no vice-captain has been appointed.

When Will Shubman Be Back?

Gill’s injury forced him to miss the 2nd Test vs India in Guwahati that began on November 22 and is ongoing. Now he has also been left out of the ODIs. As things stand, the odds of Gill returning for the T20Is are slim too. So when will he play next?

India’s next assignment after hosting South Africa is a home white-ball series vs New Zealand. New Zealand shall play three ODIs and five T20Is on Indian soil from January 11 to 31. That is expected to be Gill’s return. If he’s fit by then, it will be the first time Gill shall lead India in an ODI series at home and assist T20I skipper Suryakumar Yadav on home soil as well. Remember, he is the T20I vice-captain. Rahul, who took over as skipper is a former vice-captain. Gill’s spot has been taken by Ruturaj Gaikwad in the squad. In the 2nd Test vs South Africa, Sai Sudharsan replaced him in the playing XI.

When Do India Play Their Next Test?

Gill is currently also the Test captain, but India do not play another Test until mid 2026 when they tour Sri Lanka. India’s next home Test series is not until early 2027 when Australia come to visit. After the New Zealand series, we shall have the T20 World Cup from February 7 to March 8 and then the IPL for two months.

Shubman Gill Nearing Major Milestones

Gill needs 50 runs to become the 1st to go past 1000 in the ongoing WTC cycle. He still can unless someone surpasses him in the next six months or so. He also needs 161 runs to become the first Indian to score 3000 Test runs in the WTC. It remains to be seen when he does it.

Will Shubman Gill Lead India in All Formats?

The 26-year-old is set to lead India in the 2027 ODI World Cup. He is also being groomed to take Suryakumar’s place as T20I captain when the 35-year-old’s stint is done though it has not been specified. Will we see him lead in all three formats? Only time will tell!
