The family of an eight-year-old boy who died in hospital after breaking his arm have set up a fundraiser in his memory, describing him as "the most loving" child. Matthew Breen, from Rathnew in the Republic of Ireland, was rushed to Crumlin Children's Hospital in Dublin on Monday, November 17, after breaking his arm in two places while at school. His family said he appeared "completely fine" after the initial incident and was discharged until a later date for surgery on the broken limb.
After being readmitted, the eight-year-old's health rapidly worsened; however, and prescribed tablets and steroids didn't stop him from vomiting all day. He was sent home again, but soon developed breathing difficulties and was taken back to the children's infirmary, where he was put in an induced coma and on life support, the Irish Mirror reports. He tragically passed away on November 17, surrounded by family members.
His aunt Lauren Frampton created a GoFundMe to provide financial support for Matthew's mother and father after his untimely death, remembering him as "the most loving little boy".
"He is missed and loved by so many people," she added. "Matthew has two brothers and two sisters and ... was the eldest. He was the most heartwarming boy and will be missed ... by all who knew him.
"As a community, we've all pulled together and anything ... would really help this family during his difficult time."
The fundraiser has so far generated over €15,000 (£13,000) from more than 600 donors.
Teachers at the eight-year-olds' current and former schools, St Patrick's National in Dublin and St Joseph's National in Arklow, also chimed in to share their condolences and memories of him.
"I was lucky to have got to know him in the time I worked with him in St Joseph's, I used to look forward to seeing his cheeky little smile everyday," one of Matthew's former teachers wrote in a post online.
"He was such a happy little boy with so many people who adored him. He was so special! Rest in peace little man."
A staff member at St Patrick's added: "Matthew brought so much happiness to our school. Sending heartfelt condolences to all of his family. I know staff members, classmates and all who knew him will miss him dearly. St Pats will miss his smiley face every day. Rest in Peace."
