The pairing of Dharmendra and Hema Malini was one of the most powerful and romantic couples of Bollywood. Dharmendra was so infatuated with Hema Malini that he was ready to do anything for her. Both of them first met in 1970 on the sets of the film ‘Tum Haseen Main Jawan’. During the shooting, both of them came so close that they fell in love. Dharmendra was already married at that time. His first wife was Prakash Kaur and he had four children – Sunny, Bobby, Vijayata and Ajeeta. Hema knew all this, still she wanted to live with Dharmendra.
Dharmendra wanted to marry Hema, but did not want to divorce Prakash Kaur. It was legally difficult to marry again under the Hindu Marriage Act. Then the path chosen by both of them was surprising. On 21 August 1979, Dharmendra and Hema Malini accepted Islam. Dharmendra changed his name to Dilawar Khan Kivekam and Hema changed her name to Ayesha Bi. After this both of them got married quietly.
When this news came out, there was an uproar in the entire country. The controversy became so big that it was discussed even in Parliament. But no one could compete with love. After this, on May 2, 1980, both of them got married with great pomp as per Hindu customs.
The most beautiful thing about this love story was that no one ever tried to break anyone’s house. Hema Malini never had any problem with Prakash Kaur or her children. Prakash Kaur also never complained about Hema. Hema lived in a separate house and Dharmendra handled the responsibilities of both the families very well.
