Veteran actor Dharmendra was recently in the spotlight due to health concerns. He was admitted to the hospital after facing breathing issues but was discharged on November 12 2025. As fans prayed for his recovery an old and tender chapter from his life resurfaced—his first love a story he never quite finished.
A Childhood Love in Punjab
Dharmendra grew up in a small village in Punjab. He was in Class 6 when he lost his heart to Hamida the Class 8 daughter of his school teacher. Their connection was innocent and unspoken yet deeply felt.
Dharmendra Shares His Story on TV
Appearing on the show Dus Ka Dum with his son Bobby Deol Dharmendra fondly recalled this early love. With a shy smile he said “We used to talk through our hearts. We would sigh softly… the other person didn’t even know.”
A Love Cut Short by Partition
Their story never had a chance to grow. During the 1947 Partition Hamida and her family moved to Pakistan. Dharmendra never saw her again. All that stayed with him were her quiet smiles her gentle presence and their silent conversations.
A Poem for Hamida
Dharmendra poured this memory into a heartfelt poem describing how her slight smile drew him closer and how her silence left him unsettled:
“She would just smile and I would go near her.
She would remain silent and I would bow my head.
She would ask one thing and I would say another.
She would say ‘Don’t be sad Dharam everything will be fine in your exams.’
And then she would walk away and I would keep looking…
She would disappear and I would wonder ‘What is the question friend?’”
Love Returned Later in Life
Though his first love remained incomplete Dharmendra went on to find love twice in his lifetime. Before joining films he married Prakash Kaur in 1954 at the age of 19. The couple had four children—Sunny Bobby Vijeta and Ajita.
Meeting Hema Malini
Years later while filming Tum Haseen Main Jawaan in 1970 he met Hema Malini. Their bond grew stronger over time even though Dharmendra was already married. Unable to marry again under Hindu law without divorcing Prakash Kaur the two reportedly converted to Islam and had a nikah in 1979.
