As winter's chill sets in, many of us will be reaching for the thermostat to warm our homes. However, there's a delicate balance between maintaining a cosy home and facing hefty energy bills.

Experts advise households to ensure their heating is as efficient as possible, as this can even save you money on your heating bill. By setting your home thermostat to an optimal temperature, you can keep the cold at bay throughout winter, whilst also being cost-effective and saving money. Specialists at Your NRG have revealed the ideal temperature to keep your home warm, combat damp and mould, and it won't break the bank.

In fact, it can keep your home cosy without sending your heating bill through the roof. Speaking to the Express, the experts advised: "Keep your home's thermostat over 14°C to prevent mould growth - a little higher in tiled rooms."

Anything lower than this could lead to damp conditions, which can damage both your house structure and health. However, there's no need to have the heating on continuously to fight mould, so don't fret about heating your home when you're not there.

Instead, the NRG experts recommend programming your boiler to switch on as needed and fine-tuning it to maintain your preferred level of warmth.

This tactical adjustment could deliver "significant savings" on your energy bills, with even lowering your thermostat by just one degree potentially yielding annual savings exceeding £100.

To discover the perfect balance of staying cosy and comfortable while also cutting costs this winter, households should aim to keep their properties between 18°C and 20°C.

The experts explained: "This range provides the ideal balance for both well-being and cost-effective heating." When central heating is operating in your property, homeowners are also urged to maximise their radiators' efficiency whilst the system is running.

Most radiators feature side controls for temperature adjustment. When used properly, these thermostatic radiator valves - typically numbered from one to five (sometimes up to six) - can generate savings.

Specialists suggest starting with a setting of three or four.

They further noted that bleeding your radiators can assist in reducing expenses by eliminating air pockets that impede your heating system. It's recommended to bleed radiators annually.
