Matt and Ross Duffer, the creative masterminds behind Netflix's phenomenally successful 80s-inspired series Stranger Things, have shared intimate details about the show's conclusion, reports the Mirror.
The first volume of season five arrives on screens worldwide this week, following Netflix's strategic release of the opening five minutes and a gripping final trailer in the build-up to the premiere.
Speaking to the Radio Times, the twin duo known as the Duffer Brothers offered fascinating behind-the-scenes revelations about shooting the concluding episode, which Matt characterised as "very emotional".
The brothers disclosed how they deliberately structured the production schedule to ensure each performer filmed their ultimate Stranger Things scene on their final shooting day-an unusual arrangement given that television programmes are typically filmed non-sequentially depending on location logistics.
Matt confessed it proved "really hard" capturing those moments, suggesting it was perhaps more challenging for him and Ross as they had to "experience it many, many times for everybody's final day".
Remarkably, the finale has been kept under such tight wraps that even the performers haven't viewed it and must watch alongside everyone else when it becomes available on Netflix.
The concluding fifth season has been divided into three volumes, with the opening instalment launching on Netflix UK and Ireland on Thursday, November 27.
The remaining two volumes will debut on Boxing Day (December 26) and New Year's Day (January 1, 2026) respectively. Discussing the choice to launch season five during the festive season, following previous releases on July 4 and around Halloween, the Duffers confessed they weren't initially aware of Netflix's planned release date.
Nevertheless, the pair revealed they'd drawn inspiration from the Christmas classic Home Alone for season five and were captivated by the prospect of Stranger Things arriving during the festive period.
Matt said: "Just because we're film guys and big films were often released at Christmas. We like the idea of people watching it together."
They explained their desire for the final chapter to be a collective viewing experience rather than viewers simply binge-watching the programme alone.
Alongside the three Netflix releases, the concluding series finale will be shown in selected American cinemas for audiences seeking a cinema experience.
Viewers have already begun theorising about the story's conclusion, with countless predictions about potential character deaths in the show, which has never shied away from killing off fan favourites from Barb Holland (played by Shannon Purser) to Bob Newby (Sean Astin) and Eddie Munson (Joseph Quinn).
The series finale will conclude with one final confrontation for Hawkins as Vecna (Jamie Campbell Bower) faces off against Eleven (Millie Bobby Brown) and her friends in their efforts to prevent him from transforming the world into the Upside Down.
