The threat issued to a Block Level Officer (BLO) in Sandeshkhali over SIR form submission has heated up the local political atmosphere. The matter has gained momentum after the arrest of the accused Trinamool worker, while an alleged audio clip of the threat is also spreading rapidly in the area. In the audio, a man is heard saying in a threatening tone, “I will demolish your house. Fix it. Otherwise I will kill you by night.”

Trinamool worker Jamirul Islam Mollah arrested

BLO Deepak Mahato alleged that Trinamool worker Jamirul Islam Mollah called him, abused him and threatened to kill him. The bone of contention is the SIR form of a 97-year-old elderly voter, whose name is not found in the voter list of 2002, the last time the SIR process was conducted. Due to this, confusion has arisen in form submission and data uploading.

According to sources, when the details entered in the form could not be uploaded, Jamirul allegedly called Mahato and pressured him to “add the name somehow”. Mahato first gave written information to the Block Development Officer and then lodged a complaint at Nazat police station, in which he said that Jamirul threatened him, abused him and tried to obstruct government work. Police arrested Jamirul on Saturday (November 22) night and later produced him in Basirhat court, officials said.

Local people of Nazat area have claimed that the accused is close to the Trinamool Panchayat Pradhan of the area and works as an active agent at the booth level of the party. According to PTI report, public anger over the case has increased further after its audio clip went viral on social media. Mahato alleges that Jamirul was repeatedly pressurizing him to “add the 97-year-old man’s name to the list by any means”, failing which he threatened to demolish Mahato’s house and “set it on fire”.

Immediately after this arrest the political temperature of the area has increased. The BJP launched a scathing attack on Trinamool, alleging that “Trinamool workers are threatening BLOs out of fear of defeat in the SIR process.” Party leaders also visited the spot and demanded the administration to ensure security.

On the other hand, Trinamool Congress has not yet issued any formal response in this matter. However, at the local level, party supporters are calling this arrest a “political conspiracy”, while the opposition parties are calling it a conspiracy by the Mamata government to put pressure on government employees and include Bangladeshis in the voter list.
