Indian Army Agniveer Recruitment: Good news has arrived early this morning for candidates preparing to join the Indian Army. The Indian Army faces a shortage of approximately 1.8 lakh soldiers. To address this shortage, the Indian Army is considering increasing the vacancies for Agniveer recruitment from the current 45,000-50,000 to over 100,000 annually.

During the two years of the COVID-19 pandemic in 2020 and 2021, the Army halted recruitment, while 60,000-65,000 soldiers retired each year. This was before the launch of the Agnipath Scheme in 2022, when recruitment was conducted in the normal manner.

When the Agnipath Scheme was launched on June 14, 2022, a total of approximately 46,000 vacancies were available for recruitment in the Army, Navy, and Indian Air Force that year. Of these, 40,000 vacancies were for the Army, and the rest for the Navy and the IAF.

According to the plan at that time, the recruitment of Agniveers for the Army was to be gradually increased over the next four years, with a limit of 1.75 lakh. Recruitment figures for the Navy and Indian Air Force were also to be gradually increased to approximately 28,700 over the next four years.

Despite the commencement of a small number of recruitments in 2022 with the Agnipath scheme, the number of retiring soldiers remained at 60,000-65,000 each year, increasing the overall shortage by 20,000-25,000 each year. The current total shortage is approximately 1.8 lakh soldiers.

According to media reports, the Army is considering creating approximately 100,000 more vacancies annually for the recruitment of Agniveers starting this year, given the number of retiring soldiers and the likelihood of a gradual reduction in the number of Agniveers after December 2026.

More vacancies will be created, keeping in mind the training infrastructure of all regimental centers, ensuring that standards and proper utilization of facilities are not compromised. Responding to media queries on this matter, the Army stated that 1.75 lakh Agniveers are being recruited in the first four years of the Agnipath scheme (until the end of 2025).

The Army stated, "Agniveers will be recruited to fill the existing shortages, and vacancies will be released accordingly." Furthermore, over the next few years, soldiers recruited until 2020, before the launch of the Agnipath scheme, will continue to retire at a rate of 60,000 per year. At the same time, by the end of 2026, a percentage of Agniveers will also begin retiring as the first batch completes their four-year tenure.

The annual retirement of regular soldiers and Agniveers will further exacerbate the current shortage of soldiers in the Army. There are plans to release more vacancies over the next three to five years to fill the gap and alleviate the current shortage.
